Physician Privileges Advisory Committee (PPAC)

The Physician Privileges Advisory Committee (PPAC) advises hospitals of Alberta Health Services (AHS) and voluntary hospital boards who chose to use the Committee, and AMA Physician Locum Services® (PLS) about appropriate privileges for physicians working in AHS hospitals and voluntary hospitals and through the PLS.

The Committee was established by The Alberta Rural Physician Action Plan (RPAP) and the Alberta Medical Association (AMA) as a service to AHS and voluntary hospitals and AMA Physician Locum Services.

The Physician Privileges Advisory Committee (PPAC) is the successor to the Advisory Committee for Privileges of the Council of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) which was dissolved as of 31 December 2007.

Committee Role and Functioning

The PPAC advises AHS hospitals, voluntary hospital boards and AMA Physician Locum Service as to:

  • privileges for AMA Physician Locum Service locum physicians; and,
  • privileges for practitioners who are new to an AHS or voluntary hospital or who request additions to an existing list of physician privileges.

Recommendations regarding privileges are based on a combination of:

  • Recognized standards of practice produced by the College of Family Physicians of Canada, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the CPSA, and recognized Canadian accreditation bodies; and

  • Qualifications, training and experience of the physician.

Please Note: The PPAC only makes recommendations and all decisions related to privileges are the responsibility of AHS, voluntary hospital board or the AMA Physician Locum Service.
