Registration to Bill the AHCIP for Insured Physician Services

Alberta Health and Wellness (AH&W)

Alberta Health and Wellness is the provincial department responsible for, among other things, paying physicians through the fee-for-service system.

To Claim for Fee-for-Service Services

New physicians must register with the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) to claim fees for insured fee-for-service services. You may have been provided with an application form by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta; forms are also available on the Alberta Health and Wellness website. You will be given a practitioner identification number (PRACID) that will be used for claim processing, reporting and payment purposes.

Upon registering, new physicians are provided with A Physician’s Resource Guide that provides an overview of the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan and gives useful information related to plan coverage and claim submissions. The guide also provides a list of contact numbers for use by physicians.

You will also need to complete a number of other forms related to billing arrangements, facility registration, electronic funds transfers and information for electronic claim submissions. Information is contained in A Physician’s Resource Guide.

Alberta Health and Wellness has several branches that can provide information to physicians regarding provincial medical service policies and billing/remuneration for service provided to patients.

Alberta Health and Wellness has overall responsibility for setting standards and establishing legislation related to medical practice within the province. Staff can provide assistance if you have questions about standards, legislation or other practices within Alberta.

All existing Province of Alberta Legislation, including health acts, are available online.
