Liability Coverage

Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA)

The Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) is a medical mutual defence organization. It is an association of the profession that is operated by physicians for physicians. The Association was founded in 1901 by a group of Canadian doctors for their mutual protection against legal actions based on allegations of malpractice or negligence.

The Association was incorporated by an Act of the Parliament of Canada in 1913. It has more than 50,000 active members representing the vast majority of the medical profession in Canada. The annual membership fees are the basis for a reserve fund that makes it possible for the Association to provide the help members may need.

Membership

You must join and have liability coverage before you begin to treat any patients. Canadian Medical Protective Association dues, less $1,000 deductible, are reimbursed through the Alberta Medical Association’s Medical Liability Reimbursement (MLR) program for its members.

Membership in the CMPA is subject to the following terms:

  • The applicant must be a graduate in medicine and be duly licensed or registered by a provincial or territorial medical licensing authority;
  • The applicant must have membership either in the Alberta Medical Association, or be recommended by two members of the CMPA; and
  • Membership fees are prorated based on a full calendar month. Applicants must join and pay for a minimum of two months in a calendar year.

Members are advised not to contact the Association via e-mail/Internet when seeking assistance or advice to deal with a professional matter.
