Assist Alberta’s rural communities in the education, attraction and retention of Rural Healthcare Practitioners

If you excel at community development and facilitation and would like the opportunity to work with rural healthcare practitioners, community leaders, and influence healthcare delivery in Rural Alberta then we should talk.

The Alberta Rural Physician Action Plan (RPAP) is one of Canada’s most comprehensive programs that supports education, attraction, and retention of rural healthcare practitioners. We are in need of individuals to work directly with rural community leaders and healthcare practitioners to develop effective and innovative ways to attract and retain healthcare practitioners to rural Alberta. This role supports recruitment efforts with Primary Care Networks (PCN’s), Family Care Centres (FCC’s), private and community based clinics in rural, remote and indigenous communities.

The five (5) Rural Community Health Professional Development Consultants (Consultants) report directly to the Director of Rural Health Professions Development at RPAP. We have one (1) fulltime role based in northwestern Alberta (Peace River, Grande Prairie or any community in the northwestern Alberta or area) and one (1) part-time (0.6 FTE) opening based in Lethbridge or area on our team for rural Alberta. The focus of these roles is on supporting attracting and retaining healthcare practitioners to rural communities. One of the key ways we do this is by working with local communities and other stakeholders to establish and support sustainable community Attraction and Retention (A&R) committees.

Other responsibilities include supporting RPAP’s website, its School Outreach programs, facilitating healthcare practitioner and family integration into communities, and liaising with clinics, PCN’s, academic institutions, and others with an interest in improving rural health care services. The role involves working with the communities and other stakeholders roughly half of the time. The balance is spent organizing conferences and recruitment events, maintaining a newcomer strategy, organizing and attending health professions as a career school outreach activities (e.g. working with health professional programs and students). The role also supports RPAP’s communications and marketing strategies and collaborates on role-related content for RPAP print and digital media.

Flexibility is essential along with the ability to assess and respond to situations in the dynamic environment of health care in rural Alberta. In order to develop long-term relationships the successful candidate must possess outstanding facilitation and communication skills. Critical thinking, prioritization skills and the ability to make informed decisions on the fly is crucial. You are approachable, personable, and collaborative.

As an ideal candidate, you should:

  • Have at least 5 years of progressively more responsible management and/or professional experience
  • Have experience with community development and project facilitation
  • Have great listening skills and a keen sense of people
    • Have experience in rural health and/or the rural/community development sector
    • Be self-motivated and can inspire action in others
    • Have excellent problem solving skills, enjoy a challenge, and embrace change.
    • Like to travel, work independently, and be an integral part of a team
    • Possess excellent computer, project management, and communication skills (written & verbal)
    • Enjoy public speaking and making presentations
    • Excel at managing multiple projects in a fast paced environment with varying deadlines
    • Have experience in rural health and/or the rural/community development sector
    • For both of these positions; preference will be given to candidates who currently or are planning to reside in the area that the position will be working in

These two (2) Consultant roles as mentioned above are available immediately.

One role (0.6 FTE) will be based in Lethbridge or area.

The other role is full-time and will cover Northwestern Alberta area from Hwy 16 north and from BC/Alberta border east to Wabasca-Desmarais
