John N. Hnatuik Rural Medical Student BursaryRPAP's John N. Hnatuik Rural Medical Student Bursary provides full tuition including differential fees for each year of medical studies to reduce the financial burden faced by rural medical students and their families.
The Bursary is available to students in any year of their medical degree. Once accepted the student receives the Bursary every year until medical school graduation, contingent upon their meeting the program requirements.
The program requirements include a three-year Return-in-Service Agreement (RiSA) with RPAP, pro-rated to the number of years the Bursary is awarded. The number of Bursaries available from the RPAP shall be up to 10 per year.
Bursary Eligibility
To be eligible to apply, applicants are required to:
- be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada living in Alberta;
- be enrolled as a full-time medical student at the University of Calgary or University of Alberta;
- have resided in a rural community anywhere in Canada for a minimum of five out of seven consecutive years immediately prior to entering a university program; and
- be a member of a student Rural Medical Interest Group at the Alberta university at which the medical degree is being undertaken.
Procedures
There is one Bursary round per year. Applicants may apply for both the RPAP Rural Medical School Award and the John N. Hnatuik Rural Medical Student Bursary, but they may only accept one "award" per year. Applications available at Rural Medical Student Bursary Application 26May09.pdf RPAP reserves the right to reject any or all of the applications. The RPAP shall assess the applications against the eligibility criteria listed above, as well as:
- Community volunteerism;
- Ties to a rural community; and
- Recognition of rural physicians in their community.
Applicants who meet these criteria are then ranked according to their rural experience and financial need. Applicants may be interviewed by RPAP. All applicants are advised in writing of the outcome of their applications.
Successful applicants are required to sign an agreement and a RiSA with RPAP on acceptance of their Bursary. The agreement sets out the terms under which a Bursary is offered including:
- the opportunity, if the recipient becomes a Family physician, to practice in any non-metro (i.e. Calgary and Edmonton and surrounding community) and non regional (i.e. Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Red Deer, Grande Prairie) community, and if the recipient becomes a Royal College physician, to practice in any non-metro community
- participation in RPAP promotional activities and outreach speaking to rural students.
Continued eligibility is contingent upon the recipient maintaining satisfactory academic standing as a full-time medical student, demonstration of ongoing commitment to rural practice, and submitting a completed reapplication form. The Bursary must be returned if the RiSA commitment has not been fulfilled. Repayment terms will be determined with the recipient. Failure to fulfill the terms of the RiSA without cause acceptable to the RPAP and repayment terms fulfilled may cause the recipient to be reported to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) for unprofessional conduct.
Application Review Process
Applications will be accepted anytime prior to 1 November of each year.
RPAP shall consider the applications and make awards according to merit, eligibility and available funding.
Funding availability and priorities can be a limiting factor on the size and number of awards granted.
Applicants will receive a letter indicating the decision regarding the application, upon completion of the review process.
