Doctors complete a Bachelors degree, and either a three or four-year Medical Doctor (MD) degree. In Alberta, MD programs are offered at the University of Alberta in Edmonton and the University of Calgary.

After completing an MD program, doctors may enter medical residency programs to become a "family" physician (two-year program) or a "specialist" (four to six-year programs).

Entrance to Medical School

Medical schools are looking for individuals who are resourceful. Basic entrance requirements include required classes, academic grades, letters of recommendation in leadership and volunteer opportunities, personal interviews and the results of a Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).

Admission Requirements

The admission requirements vary from university to university but, in general the admission requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent, with common course requirements such as English 30, Pure Math 30, Biology 30, Physics 30 and Chemistry 30. Interested students should contact university admission offices (University of Medicine or University of Calgary) to ensure that they take all of the necessary pre-requisites.
