Assist Alberta’s rural communities in the education, attraction and retention of Rural Healthcare Practitioners

RPAP | Health Workforce for Alberta is one of Canada’s most comprehensive programs that supports education, attraction, and retention of rural healthcare practitioners. We are in need of individuals to work directly with rural healthcare practitioners and community leaders to develop effective and innovative ways to attract and retain healthcare practitioners to rural Alberta. This role supports recruitment efforts with Primary Care Networks (PCN’s), Family Care Centres (FCC’s), private and community based clinics in rural, remote and indigenous communities.

The Community Recruitment Consultants (CRC’s) report directly to the Director of Rural Health Professions Development at RPAP. We currently have 3 full-time employees in these roles based in Edmonton, Rimbey, and Medicine Hat. We have 2-4 openings (for a total of 5 FTE’s) on our team for rural Alberta. The focus of these roles is on attracting and retaining healthcare practitioners to rural communities. One of the key ways we do this is by working with local communities and other stakeholders to establish and support sustainable community Attraction and Retention (A&R) committees. 

Other responsibilities include supporting RPAP’s provincial recruitment website, its School Outreach program, facilitating healthcare practitioner and family integration into communities, and liaising with clinics, PCN’s, academic institutions, and others with an interest in improving rural health care services.. The role involves working with the communities and other stakeholders roughly half of the time. The balance is spent organizing conferences and recruitment events, maintaining a newcomer strategy, organizing and attending medicine as a career school outreach activities (e.g. working with medical school programs and students). The role also supports RPAP’s communications and marketing strategies and collaborates on role-related content for RPAP print and digital media.

We encourage and celebrate innovation in these roles; we are seeking strong professionals who are comfortable thinking outside the box. Flexibility is essential along with the ability to assess and respond to situations in the dynamic environment of health care in rural Alberta. In order to develop long-term relationships the successful candidate must possess outstanding facilitation and communication skills. Critical thinking, prioritization skills and the ability to make informed decisions on the fly is crucial. You are approachable, personable and collaborative.

As an ideal candidate, you should:

  • Have at least 5 years of progressively more responsible management and/or professional experience
  • Have experience with community development and project facilitation
  • Have great listening skills and a keen sense of people
  • Be self-motivated and can inspire action in others
  • Have excellent problem solving skills, enjoy a challenge, and embrace change.
  • Like to travel, work independently and be an integral part of a team
  • Possess excellent computer, project management, and communication skills (written & verbal)
  • Enjoy public speaking and making presentations
  • Excel at managing multiple projects in a fast paced environment with varying deadlines
  • Have experience in rural health and/or the rural/community development sector

The CRC roles will be based anywhere in rural Alberta or Edmonton. These are either part-time or full-time employment positions with an attractive compensation package and full, employer paid benefits.
