On 25 November 2015, residents at the University of Alberta received transition to practice information on several topics, including the opportunities and challenges of lifelong learning.
Each year, RPAP | Health Workforce for Alberta, in collaboration with the Professional Association of Resident Physicians of Alberta (PARA), hosts a series of Transition to Practice 101 events.
"A lot of these residents are used to working onsite in our urban areas and not necessarily in our rural areas", explains Kim MacKinnon, RPAP's Senior Community Recruitment Consultant in Southern Alberta. "[We help residents] make connections ... and be a matching services between areas of the province that are hiring and resident physicans that are ready to move into full time practice."
In between the sessions were 20 minute networking breaks, during which the residents enjoyed some finger foods, and chatted with a variety of exhibitors including provincial recruiters, Medical Affairs, Primary Care Networks, MD Management, and the Alberta Medical Association.
"Part of events like this is me figuring out what's best for my future, what opportunites are out there, and what to pursue," commented Chris Beavington, a first year family medicine resident at the University of Alberta.
Transition to Practice brings provincial recruitment professionals together with resident physicians of various specialties, in different stages of their residencies. In 2015, these events have taken place in Edmonton, and Calgary, with the third one planned for 11 December in the Red Deer, Alberta.
